To summarize, you always want to maximize the A/D ratio in your favor. As you noted yourself, combat is an inscrutable, unpredictable mystery until you comprehend the math, and (only) then you'll know how to properly value things like level-up +stat choices, skills, equipment/artifacts, spells, and which troops to buy up. But at least a few times early on, hover over different victims and do the computation yourself (right-click on troops to open their stats windows), just to get a feel for the numbers. Workaround: Use eggs and such in a castle that has an empty garrison slot, and promptly offload excess guys. You can exceed your Leadership cap by using unit-creating objects like eggs or coffins, which can instantly-create more units in 1 troop than your Leadership supports. You can't buy more units than your Leadership limit for that unit type. That means 1 troop of 9 Inquisitors, or two troops of 1+8 or 5+4, or 3 troops of 3+3+3, and so on. So if your Leadership is 920 and Inquisitors "cost" 100 Leadership each, then you can have 9 Inquisitors total. This max is per unit type, even if you split them into 2+ troops. Troops have quantity, which is capped by your hero's Leadership (truncating fractions). This doesn't really make you stronger, though see #2 below.Ģ. Just click on an empty space to show the "" double-arrows, then click again on the double-arrow, and it will open the quantity slider. You can split a troop into 2 troops of the same type. Still, they're very useful for carrying spare guys on long trips, so you can replace attrition losses without running home to buy more guys. Then you can fill them with any 2 stacks of unit (with no leadership limit), but they don't fight (and the skill tells you that). In the Mind skill tree, you can get 2 levels of Reserve, which opens up the two reserve slots next to your 5 troops.
